“One day I will not forget in the first match I played for my country. It was unbelievable. The day before, Sukhi sir, my first national team coach, told me I was going to start. I can’t describe the feeling. I even sprayed perfume on my jersey for no reason. From breakfast to my debut goal to conceding in the 80th minute, that day remains one of the best of my national team journey.

The past 19 years have been a mix of duty, pressure, and immense joy. I never really thought about my individual achievements, but recently, as I approached this decision, I found myself reminiscing about every game, coach, and teammate.

When I finally decided this would be my last game, I told my family. My dad was relieved and happy, but my mom and wife burst into tears. It wasn’t because I was tired or anything like that; it just felt like the right time.

I will definitely miss playing for my country. The kid in me never wants to stop, but the mature player knows it’s time. Every training session now feels special, and I don’t feel pressured about the Kuwait game. I just want to enjoy it and give my all.

I don’t think any player has received as much love and affection as I have in my country. It’s time for the next number nine to emerge, and I’m confident many will step up. Playing for the national team has always been my greatest joy, and I will miss everything about it.

From my first camp with Venkatesh as captain to playing alongside legends like Bhaichung Bhutia and emerging talents born in 2002 and 2003, every moment has been special. I’ve learned from so many coaches and staff, and without them, these 19 years wouldn’t have been possible.

Whether you think I should retire or not, your encouragement has been my strength. Let’s make my last game against Kuwait memorable and end on a high note.”
